How We Build Packing Guides

Every TripTiq packing guide is built to answer one question: what will you actually need for this specific trip? Not a generic checklist — a list shaped by where you're going, when you're going, who you're traveling with, and what typically goes wrong.

What We Consider

  • Weather patterns — historical temperature ranges, precipitation likelihood, UV index, and humidity for your destination and travel dates.
  • Destination type — a theme park trip has different demands than a beach vacation, a city tour, or a backcountry hike. We tailor recommendations to activity type.
  • Traveler profile — a family with toddlers packs differently than a solo minimalist. Age ranges, group size, and travel experience all shape the list.
  • Real traveler feedback — what people actually forgot, what they wish they'd skipped, and what saved their trip. We draw on community discussions, contributor experience, and trip reports.
  • Failure modes — every “must pack” item prevents a specific problem. We don't recommend items because they're popular — we recommend them because skipping them causes a measurable downside.

Our Item Taxonomy

Every item in our guides is classified into one of three tiers:

Must Pack — prevents a specific failure. If you skip this item, something measurably bad happens on your trip.

Situational — depends on your specific plans. We explain the conditions under which this item matters so you can decide.

Skip These — commonly overpacked items. We explain what replaces them or why they're unnecessary for this trip type.

What We Don't Cover

TripTiq is not an authority on everything. We explicitly defer to official sources on:

  • TSA and airline security rules — carry-on restrictions, prohibited items, and liquid limits change. Always verify at tsa.gov.
  • Medical and health advice — we may mention sunscreen or first aid, but we are not healthcare providers. Consult your doctor for travel health decisions.
  • Visa, immigration, and legal requirements — passport validity, visa requirements, and entry rules vary by country and change frequently. Check travel.state.gov.
  • Destination-specific policies — park rules, resort restrictions, and local regulations. We link to official sources when relevant.

How Affiliate Links Work

Some of our guides include links to products on Amazon and other retailers. When you buy through these links, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Affiliate links never influence which items appear on a list or how they're ranked. Our recommendations are based on what prevents trip failures — not what pays the highest commission. Products are optional examples, not the advice itself.

Our Contributors

TripTiq guides are written and reviewed by real travelers with experience in the destinations they cover. Each guide credits its contributor with a byline and bio so you know who's behind the advice.
